Why do Students Cheat?

Here is what some students had to say...

bulletI was young and foolish.

bulletBecause I didn't want to get a bad grade.

bulletI didn't know the answer.

bulletI felt pressured because the instructor based a large portion (50%) of the overall grade on the final paper. Without receiving a good grade on the paper I wouldn't have passed the class. I was also a new student and younger back then.

bulletTo get an A.

bulletBecause I wanted my friends to like me. I wanted to get full credit for my homework. Hey!

bulletI think it's really pathetic that at the college level  you are so preoccupied with cheating and the general conduct of students. Sometimes  I feel as if I am back in junior high. I don't think these problems are any worse on this campus but staff and faculty sure seems to be obsessed with either catching students cheating  or trying to twist any little disagreement that a student might have with an instructor into a conduct violation. Really, really sad.

bulletIn high school (1975) because I didn't study for a test.

bulletThe material was hard to grasp. Sometimes just pure laziness.

bulletThat depends what the meaning of [cheating] is!

bulletDid not study enough.

bulletI don't initiate it... and I never plan to cheat... I always try to stay honest. I know this is wrong. In my case  if I sit right next to someone who initiates cheating during exams then I will not be strong enough to resist the temptations and somehow cooperate a little bit. After all  this is cheating. This stuff did happen to me twice though I have never got caught  it already makes me feel bad and guilty. So if I have choices  I'd rather sit with someone who will not cheat  or I will choose sitting in the first few rows to avoid suspicions. I do it is not because I am afraid of getting caught nor I care about how others commenting on me  I just care about whether I have really learned the materials or not. I'd rather fail than cheat.

bulletDidn't have time to study.

bulletI was young and ignorant. I have learnt from it and would never do it again however.

bulletI did not have time to study for the test.

bulletFrench test in high school... dyslexia makes it damn hard to spell.

bulletPressure to maintain good grades.

bulletI knew I wasn't going to get caught and I didn't have the time or resources to complete the work myself.

bulletWasn't sure of the test answers.
